The USS Moinester (DE / FF-1097) was a Knox-class frigate . She served in the United States Navy from 1974 to 1994 . It was named after Lieutenant Robert W. Moinester (born July 15, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York, † January 31, 1968 in Huế , Vietnam ), who fell during the initial phase of the Battle of Huế .

history

The Moinester was laid down on August 25, 1972 at Avondale Shipyards in New Orleans , Louisiana . The launch took place on May 12, 1973 after she had been baptized by the widow of the namesake. The commissioning with the Navy took place on November 2, 1974.

The ship was used in the Atlantic fleet, the home port was Norfolk . In the late 1980s she was assigned to the Naval Reserve Fleet.

The frigate was decommissioned on July 28, 1994, and remained in the Navy's register of ships until November 1, 1995. On the day of its decommissioning, it was leased to Egypt , where it was put into service as Rashid (F-966) . The final takeover by the Egyptian Navy took place on March 25, 1998
