The USS Cook (DE / FF-1083) was a Knox-class frigate . She served in the United States Navy from 1971 to 1992 . The ship was named after Lieutenant Commander Wilmer Paul Cook (born October 1, 1932 in Annapolis , Maryland , † December 22, 1967 over Vietnam), a naval aviator who was shot down by enemy air defenses in 1967 during an attack mission over Vietnam.

history

The Cook was laid down on March 20, 1970 at Avondale Shipyards in New Orleans , Louisiana . The launch took place on January 23, 1971, the commissioning with the Navy on December 18, 1971.

The ship was used in the Pacific Fleet, the home port was San Diego , California .

In late April 1975 the Cook was involved in Operation Frequent Wind , the evacuation of Saigon . On May 14, 1979 there was a collision between the frigate and the tanker, USNS Mars (T-AFS 1) while refueling at sea, in which seven sailors were injured on board.

The frigate was decommissioned on April 30, 1992, and remained in the Navy register of ships until January 11, 1995.

As early as May 31, 1994, the ship was leased to Taiwan , where it was put into service as Hae Yang (FF-936) . Taiwan acquired the ship on September 29, 1999 and only decommissioned it on May 1, 2015.
