The USS Connole (DE / FF-1056) was a Knox-class frigate . She served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1992 and in the Greek Navy from 1995 to 2003 . It was named after Commander David R. Connole (September 8, 1912 - March 1945), commander of the submarine USS Trigger , which was probably sunk off the Japanese coast in March 1945 .
history
The Connole was laid down on March 23, 1967 at Avondale Shipyards in New Orleans , Louisiana . The launch took place on July 20, 1968, on August 30, 1969, the ship was put into service with the Navy.
The frigate was assigned to the US Atlantic Fleet and its home port was Newport , Rhode Island . It operated mostly in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. On August 30, 1992, the ship was decommissioned, on January 15, 1995 it was removed from the Naval Vessel Register.
HS Epirus (F-456)
The frigate was handed over to Greece , where it was used as the Epirus (F-456) from 1995 to 2003 . In 2006 the Epirus was fired as a target ship by an AGM-119 Penguin MK 2 MOD 7 guided missile , which had been fired from an S-70B-6 Aegean Hawk , and received several hits from the 5 "gun of the Greek frigate HS Psara (F -454), whereupon she heeled to starboard and sank.
