The USS Knox (DE / FF-1052) was the lead ship of the Knox class . She served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1992 . She was the second ship to be named Knox and the first ship to be named after Commodore Dudley Wright Knox.
history
The keel-laying of the Knox took place on October 5, 1965 at Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle , Washington . Baptized by the granddaughter of the namesake, the ship was launched on November 19, 1966. However, it was not entered into service with the Navy until two and a half years later, on April 12, 1969.
After the test drives off the California coast, the Knox was relocated to her new home port Pearl Harbor in December 1969 . In the following years she made several long voyages in the Pacific, in 1972 she went to the dock for the first time for an overhaul. From August to December 1973 she took part in extensive sonar tests off Hawaii, in September 1974 she was relocated off the coast of Vietnam , where she remained in use for nine months. In late April 1975 she took part in the evacuation of Saigon . In the summer of 1975 the ship was a guest star on the television series Hawaii Five-Zero , after which it was overhauled for the second time by October 1976. In August 1977 the frigate was moved to Yokosuka as part of the 7th Fleet . In the following years she made several long journeys and visited New Zealand and Australia , among others . On February 14, 1992, the Knox was retired after more than 23 years of service and towed to Bremerton . Until 2003 it was planned to keep it as a museum ship . Instead, the Knox was sunk on August 7, 2007 as a target ship off Guam .
