The USS Portsmouth (CL-102) was a Cleveland-class light cruiser of the United States Navy .
history
The Portsmouth was on 29 June 1943 at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Newport News , Virginia set at Kiel . After the ship was christened by Mrs. Marian M. Dale and Mrs. Sarah B. Leigh, the cruiser was launched on September 20, 1944 and entered service with the US Navy on June 25, 1945 under the command of Captain Heber B. Brumbaugh posed.
After test drives off the Cuban coast, the cruiser was placed under the "Operational Development Force" in Norfolk, to which he belonged until spring 1946. In May 1946 the Portsmouth set out for a “goodwill cruise” to Africa and visited Cape Town , Lagos , Freetown , Monrovia , Dakar and Casablanca as well as Naples and Palermo in the Mediterranean . On November 25, the cruiser Norfolk left again for the Mediterranean, where it arrived in Naples on December 7. The Portsmouth then moved to Trieste and stayed in the Adriatic until February 1947. In March she returned to Trieste, and in April the cruiser set course for the United States. From November 1947 to March 1948 another mission followed in the Mediterranean to escort the USS Midway . On March 11, the cruiser went to dock for overhaul at the Boston Navy Yard . After the work was completed, the Portsmouth made several trips with marine reserve agents in the Caribbean. On March 9, 1949, the cruiser ran into the Philadelphia Navy Yard , where preparations were made for decommissioning. The Portsmouth was released from active service on June 15, 1949 and transferred to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet . On January 15, 1971, the Portsmouth was struck off the register of ships in the US Navy and sold for scrapping on March 21, 1974.
