The USS Roark (DE / FF-1053) was a Knox-class frigate . She served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1991 . It was named after William Marshall Roark (born October 23, 1943, Sioux City, Iowa, † April 7, 1965 over North Vietnam), a US naval aviator who was shot down in 1965 during a mission over North Vietnam.

history

The Roark was laid down on February 2, 1966 at Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle , Washington . The launch took place on April 24, 1967, after she had been baptized by the widow of the namesake. The commissioning with the Navy took place on November 22, 1969.

The ship was assigned to the Pacific Fleet, the home port was San Diego . In the early 1970s, the ship operated off Vietnam , where the Roark received three Battle Stars.

The frigate was decommissioned on December 14, 1991, and remained in the Navy's register of ships until January 11, 1995. In 2004 she was towed to Brownsville , Texas , where she was scrapped by the International Shipbreaking Corporation.
