Goswin de Stassart

Goswin Joseph Augustin Baron de Stassart (born September 2, 1780 in Mechelen , † October 16, 1854 in Brussels ) was a Dutch - Belgian politician .

Life

Stassart studied law in Paris , became an auditor in the French Council of State in 1804 , was appointed director in Tyrol in 1805 and in 1807 with the French army in Prussia . In 1810 he became prefect of the Vaucluse department and in 1811 of the département of the mouths of the Meuse . After the second restoration he lived on his estate near Namur until the city of Namur sent him to the Dutch Second Chamber of the States General in 1822 , where he belonged to the opposition. After the outbreak of the Belgian Revolution in Brussels in September 1830, he was among the members of the delegates from the southern provinces who followed the convocation of the Chamber in The Hague . In 1831 he went back to Belgium, where he was elected to Congress and a member of the Provisional Government and then the Senate . In this position he held the office of President for seven sessions , while he was also appointed Governor of Brabant by the government in 1834 , but lost both of these dignities in 1838 because, as Grand Master of Belgian Freemasonry , he had openly broken with the episcopate that was feuding the same. In 1840 he became envoy to Turin for a short time . In 1841 he laid down his dignity as Grand Master of Belgian Freemasonry. He died in Brussels on October 16, 1854.

Works

His writings (memoranda, speeches, reviews, etc., but especially excellent fables) were collected in Brussels in 1854.
