Erich Berschkeit

Erich Berschkeit (* 26. December 1926 in Šilutė (Heydekrug), Lithuania ; † 19th May 2002 ) was a German SPD - politician , mayor , member of parliament , council member and Chairman of the Rhenish lignite-Werke AG. In local politics he was active in the Aachen district , particularly in the northern district of Aachen and in Eschweiler .

Life and work

Berschkeit was born in Šilutė, a place in the Memelland , which was annexed to Lithuania in 1923 . After an apprenticeship as a bricklayer in Emsland , Berschkeit, who was a Roman Catholic , worked on construction until 1951. He then worked for Rheinbraun AG for almost 40 years . Initially a miner in the open-cast mine, he became the local works council chairman in 1961 and chairman of the general works council in 1970. From 1975 he was head of the social affairs department of Rheinische Braunkohle AG and from 1979 finally authorized signatory .

In 1971 in Oberhausen and 1972 in Hanover , he was elected to the new main board at the extraordinary trade union congress of the IGBE .

Political party

Erich Berschkeit joined the SPD in 1946. In 1973 he sat on the federal board of the working group for employee issues for the Middle Rhine district . From 1979 to 1986 he was deputy chairman of the SPD in the Aachen district. In the SPD local association Dürwiss , which he had co-founded, he was chairman for many years and later honorary chairman from 1955.

From 1952 to 1972 Berschkeit was a member of the council of the Dürwiß community and from 1961 to 1972 in the district council of the Jülich district . After the municipal reorganization, Erich Berschkeit worked from 1972 to 1986 as the SPD parliamentary group chairman in the city council of Eschweiler. On July 2, 1986, surprisingly for private reasons, he resigned his council mandate, resigned as mayor and left Eschweiler.

From November 4, 1980 to February 18, 1987, Berschkeit was a member of the German Bundestag in its 9th and 10th electoral terms . In the federal election in 1980 he won the direct mandate in constituency 54 ( Aachen district ), in the federal election in 1983 he moved into parliament via the state list of the SPD North Rhine-Westphalia .

From 1964 to 1972 Erich Berschkeit was mayor of the municipality of Dürwiß and from November 19, 1984 to 1986 as mayor of the city ​​of Eschweiler .

Honors

On February 22, 1986, Berschkeit was awarded the “Great City Medal in Gold” by Wattrelos , Eschweiler's French twin town. After him, the Erich-Berschkeit-Pokal of the sailing club Eschweiler See e. V. named for regattas on the Blausteinsee .
