The USUMA is a German market and social research institute based in Berlin-Weissensee . USUMA stands for “Independent Service for Surveys, Methods and Analyzes” and, as a full-service institute, oversees the practical implementation of empirical research projects - from questionnaire development to data collection and processing to the interpretation of the survey results . USUMA is a member of the German Market and Social Research Institute working group . V. (ADM), founding member of the ADM Telephone Sampling Working Group and member of the ADM-F2F Sampling Working Group.

history

The company was founded on February 28, 1990 by the three scientists from the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW) Rainer Schwarz, Wolfgang Reymann and Günter Kapelle as a " joint venture " company in cooperation with the research group Wahlen and the Bielefeld Institute Emnid . The aim of the political survey research was to measure the voting behavior of the GDR population in the 1990 Volkskammer election . It was thus the first independent opinion research institute that was founded in the GDR after the peaceful revolution in 1989 . A week before the election, USUMA carried out an initial survey which, in addition to the results obtained by the Allensbach Institute for Demoscopy , most accurately predicted the future election results. For projections on the evening of the election, USUMA organized the representative survey of voters in 400 polling stations and the prompt transmission of the survey data by telephone to the analysis center of the Elections Research Group in Berlin. In the 1990s, USUMA established itself as an empirical survey institute through successful collaboration with EMNID and the Wahlen research group, such as the “ Politbarometer Ost”. In addition to the implementation of personal interviews in so-called “face-to-face study designs”, with the progressive expansion of the telephone network, nationwide computer-aided telephone surveys ( CATI ) have become an important survey technique of the institute.

Middle studies

USUMA has been investigating the political attitudes of the population in Germany for the Leipzig working group led by Elmar Brähler and Oliver Decker since 2002 . Within the framework of this research work, which has become known as the middle studies , representative surveys are carried out every two years. Over the years, the “Mitte” studies have developed into a highly regarded barometer of political attitudes in Germany. The empirical data obtained with the help of USUMA and the socio-psychological analyzes of the “Mitte” studies at the University of Leipzig have now become the nationwide basis for dealing with right-wing extremism in Germany.

Scientific collaborations

Together with the GESIS - Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences , the Technical University of Dresden and the Robert Koch Institute , USUMA is working on best practice guidelines to establish uniform standards for quality management of telephone surveys in social and market research . The DFG project “MiMoSe - Quality Management for Telephone Surveys as part of Mixed-Mode Surveys” runs from December 2014 to July 2017.
