The Union Sportive Montagnarde de Lochrist ( US Montagnarde for short ) is a French football club from Inzinzac-Lochrist in the Breton department of Morbihan ; "La Montagnarde" is a bit higher situated district in Lochrist. The amateur club has reached the main round of the national competition for the Coupe de France several times since the 1980s and has even made it to the second round twice. That is why he is considered to be one of the most successful " thumbsticks " - in the French soccer cup, low- ranking clubs that do particularly well are referred to as petits poucets - in the country.

The club colors are blue and red. The club's president is currently Kevin Le Gal, while Romuald Le Maguer is the first team coach. The league eleven have played their home games since 1948 in the urban Stade de Mané-Braz , which today has a capacity of 3,500 seats. (As of January 2018)

History and league affiliation

The USM was founded in 1937 by workers associated with the Socialist Party and the trade union movement. Until the 1960s, most of the players worked in the local metalworking company (Forges d'Hennebont) , which was closed in 1968 . The USM players and teams are still referred to as "the smithy" (les Forgerons) to this day. Even in the 21st century, older club members such as club chronicler Albert Giovannelli attach great importance to the statement that the club was an association of metal workers, but never one of the company - and that he had never received any form of support from it, neither financial nor any exemptions from three-shift operation , for example on the occasion of important games. With Gilbert Le Chenadec , a later French national player emerged from the club in the 1950s , who returned to Inzinzac-Lochrist after finishing his career as a coach.

The eleven from the community of 6,000 people have played in the third division since 1979 and only missed promotion to Division 2 by two points in 1986 . In the past decade and a half, however, she has only moved between fourth and sixth division. In the 2018/19 season she competes in the fifth highest division (National 3) .

A team of cup surprises

Unlike in championship operation , the US Montagnarde has repeatedly caused a sensation nationwide in cup competition for decades. In the 2011/12 cup they reached the main round for the ninth time (thirty-second finals). For games against particularly attractive opponents, the team often avoided the Stade du Moustoir in Lorient, just 15 kilometers away . But some of their cup games have also been broadcast live from Inzinzac-Lochrist, especially on TV Breizh .

So far, the USM has been eliminated in the first main round five times ( 1986 , 1991 , 2000 , 2011 and 2012 ). In four participations, however, she managed to stay longer in the competition: 1979/80 she first defeated the first division SCO Angers , but then failed in the round of the last 32 teams at the later surprise finalist US Orléans . Also in 2004/05 , a second division team, CS Sedan , who also advanced to the final, ended the USM's further-reaching hopes in the round of sixteen.

In 1998/99 and 2001/02, however, she was even among the 16 best cup teams in the country. In 1999 the then fifth division had defeated Paris FC , who were two classes higher, 4-0 one round before , before Olympique Grand Rouen prevailed in the round of 16 with a 2-0 win after extra time at the Stade Mané Braz . In 2002 the Forgerons defeated first second division SM Caen (2: 1) and then third division ESOF La Roche (4: 2); then, however, they were defeated by the Ligue 1 team of AS Monaco with 0: 1. At that time, the footballers from Inzinzac-Lochrist only played in the sixth class Division d'honneur and were the first team of this level to have made it that far in the long history of the competition.
