Ubaoner , ancient Egyptian Uba-iner , is the name of a fictional ancient Egyptian magician who appears in one of the five sagas of the Westcar ( Middle Kingdom ) papyrus and, according to the story, performs a miracle at the court of King ( Pharaoh ) Nebka ( 3rd Dynasty ).

The literary person

Ubaoner only appears in the second story of the Westcar papyrus - there is no historical or even archaeological evidence of it. However, this literary figure is of some importance for Egyptology , since it depicts a classic case of adultery on the part of the wife and a punishment that was common in ancient Egypt, in this case execution . A strikingly positive character image of King Nebka is drawn: He, Nebka, in his role as a just judge , punishes consistently committed injustice or unethical behavior (the adultery described).

The story of Ubaoner

According to the papyrus, Ubaoner is betrayed by his wife with a common citizen. In order to punish the citizen, Ubaoner makes a wax crocodile that turns into a real one and ultimately devours the citizen. He leaves his unfaithful wife to the court of King Nebka, who in turn condemns the adulteress to death.
