Ubari ( Arabic أوباري, also Awbari ) is an oasis area in the south-west of Libya in the historical great province of Fessan in the municipality of Wadi al-Haya . The main town is the city of Awbari, with a population of 40,000 (as of 2003) .

Ubari is located in the valley of the Wadi al-Agial. In addition to this valley, there are other oases and a road that connects Sabha , in the central area of the Sahara , with Awaynat and Ghat on the south-western border with Algeria . In the past, this street was one of the main routes of the Trans Sahara - caravan route from the regions of West Africa to the ports on the Mediterranean. On this road about 30 km east of Ubari is the oasis town of Garama with the remains of an old Berber capital of the Garamanten . Halfway between Ubari and Sabha there are four small oases with salt lakes in Erg Ubari-Nord, which are also tourist destinations. The most famous of them is that of Gaberoun . According to Ghat, Ubari is the capital of the Kel Ajjer union of the Tuareg .

history

When the First World War broke out , the Ottoman Empire , allied with Austria and Germany, entered the war on October 29, 1914.

The Senussi , encouraged by the Turks, tried to take advantage of the situation and began a series of actions against the Italian garrisons and their supply convoys in Libya while Italy was still neutral.

Beginning in December 1914 came from Italy, the order, all the forces in the Fezzan to Birak focus. They were then evacuated to several cities, including Ghadames . Nalut , attacked by Senussi, was occupied by Italian troops on December 15th, but Sabha was given lost. After that, the whole region of the Wadi al-Shati 'fell into an uproar. The Italian withdrawal from all parts of Fezzan accelerated. The garrison of Murzuk , like those of Ghat, reached the coast on December 12th after a long march through the desert. The Ubari garrison, on the other hand, was attacked by the rebel Senussi with superior forces and, after long resistance, completely destroyed.
