Ubertinus de Casale , Italian Ubertino da Casale , German Ubertin von Casale (* 1259 in Casale Monferrato , † after 1328 ) was an Italian theologian who, as a spokesman with Angelus Clarenus and Petrus Johannes Olivi, belonged to the spiritual movement within the Franciscan order .

Ubertin sharply criticized the incumbent popes in his surviving writings. In his writing arbor vitae crucifixae , in the fifth book, the interpretation of the Revelation of John , he interprets the first beast (Rev 13) to Boniface VIII (1294-1303), the second to Benedict XI. (1303-1304). Even the number 666 (Rev 13:18) is interpreted as Benedict ( Βενεδίκτος with Greek letters).

Ubertino da Casale appears in Umberto Eco's novel The Name of the Rose . There he is named as the author of the book Arbor vitae crucifixae , which is said to have been the essential template for Dante Alighieri's "great poem", which probably means the Divina Commedia .
