FC Lok Leipzig II his first point game in the men's area. From 1976 to 1980 he was used as a defender in the junior league. At the same time, Rietzschel also played in the GDR league from 1976. Already in the 1976/77 season he had 18 missions there, in which he was called up at all game levels. In the long run, however, Rietzschel could not prevail in the league team, because in the three following seasons with a total of 78 games, he only came to 17 missions in which he scored two goals.

From the 1980/81 season on, Udo Rietzschel played for seven seasons with the Army Sports Community Forward Dessau in the second-rate GDR league , where he was a regular player until the end of the 1985/86 season. Under coach Otto Fräßdorf he was initially used as a striker, in 1981/82 interim coach Lothar Wehrmann Rietzschel worked as a defender. Rietzschel usually kept this position permanently, only towards the end of his career at ASG did Ritzschel return as a striker for several game days. In 1986 he played 134 games out of 190 possible league appearances and scored 31 goals. At the beginning of the 1986/87 season, Udo Rietzschel was 30 years old, but was nominated again as a defender by Vorwärts Dessau. However, he was only used in one league game and after the end of the season declared his retirement from performance-related football.

As a recreational footballer, Rietzschel then joined the district league club Union Mühlhausen , with whom he became district champion in 1989 and helped the team to rise to the GDR league. But then he no longer competed there.
