The Uelle University in Isiro is a university in Isiro run by the Roman Catholic Dominican Order and the only university in Ober-Uelle in the Democratic Republic of the Congo .
history
The establishment of the university in the Uelle region had to take a long time. On the occasion of the 7th anniversary of the arrival of the first Dominican Brothers in the Congo, three second and third year students in Rome in 1960 published a memorandum in which the first traces of the university were drawn. The three, Jean Mawa, Vincent Awiore and Clément Masikini, today all Dominican Fathers, wrote a year later in the book Dominicains au Congo (Dominicans in the Congo) :
“In the near future, the Dominicans will be opening a study house in which they will receive and educate locally appointed youngsters in an African atmosphere. (...) You are planning a center for cultural research which, in close cooperation with the secular elite, will contribute to increasing the value of the African heritage. The first instrument to be built is a library. "
But the spiritual fathers of the university were sent to more urgent tasks: first, secondary schools had to be opened and operated. After the Simba uprising in 1964, the Dominicans built the college that exists today under the name of Kizito on behalf of the provincial government of Uelle .
It was only after the government opened higher education to the private sector in 1989 that the Dominicans saw an opportunity to fulfill their long-cherished plan.
As early as 1993, a number of professors and clergymen deposited the statutes for a university in Isiro with the competent court. However, there were also state plans for a university. In 1996 the Dominicans managed to combine both projects under their care, whereupon all administrative hurdles were overcome within two years. The outbreak of the African World War in August 1998 prevented the opening in November of the same year. It was delayed by three years due to the war. The opening took place on September 22, 2001 and the course began on October 29 of the same year with around 100 students.

Partnerships
The university has entered into various partnerships, on the academic level with the Autonomous University of Madrid , the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Freiburg im Üechtland , on the development level with the technical cooperation of Belgium and the German branch of MISSIO .
