Life

Landmesser studied human medicine at the Hannover Medical School from 1990 to 1997 , where he received his doctorate in 1998. Following a two-year research stay at the Department of Cardiology at Emory University in Atlanta, USA, as a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Landmesser returned to Hanover and completed his habilitation in 2005 on the subject of oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction in cardiovascular diseases . After his specialist training in cardiology and internal medicine was recognized, he was called to the University Hospital Zurich as senior clinical physician . In 2010 he was appointed professor by the medical faculty and the university management of the University of Zurich. This was followed by promotion to senior doctor and member of the clinic management, and in 2012 to deputy clinic director of the Clinic for Cardiology at the University Hospital Zurich. Landmesser has been Clinic Director of the Clinic for Cardiology at the Charité since 2014. and was also appointed medical director of the Charité Center for Cardiovascular and Vascular Medicine (CC11) at the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Landmesser is also editor of the European Heart Journal and 2012–2014 visiting professor at University College London . Landmesser is an expert in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular prevention.

Scientific contributions

Research work by Professor Landmesser deals with the mechanisms that lead to coronary heart disease and especially myocardial infarction as well as new catheter-based diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in cardiac medicine. The working group around Professor Landmesser deals in particular with the vascular function and the role of lipids in coronary heart disease. a. show that the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) , the so-called "good" cholesterol is so changed in patients with coronary artery disease or kidney dysfunction that it loses its protective properties, which could explain why a therapeutic increase in HDL is not necessarily can lead to a reduction in cardiovascular risk. Furthermore, the working group around Professor Landmesser validated new high-resolution catheter-based imaging methods of the coronary arteries and investigated new catheter-based methods for stroke prophylaxis. Landmesser continued to work actively in the task force of the European Society for Cardiology (ESC) to develop the European treatment guidelines for coronary artery disease.

Memberships in scientific associations

Landmesser is a member of the German Society for Cardiology and the Swiss Society for Cardiology. Landmesser has been a member of the European Society of Cardiology since 2009 , where he has worked on several guideline commissions. He has been Treasurer and Member of the Executive Board of the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (EACPR) since 2012 .

Honors

In 2001 he received the “Outstanding Fellows in Cardiology Special Recognition Award” from the Cardiology Fellows Forum of Excellence, Anaheim, CA (USA) . In 2003 the Braukmann Wittenberg Foundation awarded the “Braukmann Wittenberg Award” to the Hanover Medical School Landmesser. He also received the "Jan Brod Prize" from the Hannover Medical School in 2005. In 2012 Landmesser was awarded the “Georg Friedrich Götz Prize”, the official prize of the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich.
