Ulignano is a fraction of the municipality of San Gimignano in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

geography

According to the number of inhabitants, the place is the largest district of San Gimignano and is located approx. 5 kilometers northeast of the main town San Gimignano and approx. 28 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital Siena . It is 168 meters and had about 700 inhabitants in 2001. Today (2017) there are about 500. The place is in the Elsatal (Val d'Elsa), the river Elsa flows about 1 km east of Ulignano. The closest places to the main town of San Gimignano are Vico d'Elsa (municipality of Barberino Val d'Elsa ( FI ), approx. 2 km northeast), Poggibonsi (approx. 6 km southeast) and Certaldo (FI, approx. 6 km northwest).

history

Finds from the year 2002 suggest an Etruscan settlement , when a stele was discovered near the hill Poggio di Torre a Ulignano that dates back to the 5th century BC. BC or 6th century BC Chr. Is assigned.

The place was first mentioned in 1188 by Heinrich VI. in a letter to Ildebrando Pannocchieschi, the Bishop of Volterra . In 1251 the place came under the rule of San Gimignano.
