Ulrich Wolfgang Heber (born October 25, 1930 in Freital ; † June 12, 2016 in Klingenberg ) was a German professor of botany at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg .

Life

His main areas of research are the biochemistry of stress in plants: freeze resistance, water balance, air pollutants such as SO 2 or ozone. With this work he contributed to the knowledge of the much-discussed forest decline in the 1980s .

But he also made significant contributions to the knowledge of the exchange of substances between chloroplast and cytoplasm. His 1974 article Metabolite exchange between chloroplasts and cytoplasm (Annu. Rev. Plant Physiol. 25: 393-421) was cited over 150 times in the first six years.

Heber received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 1986 together with Otto Ludwig Lange . It was the first time that a Leibniz Prize was awarded to two people. In 1990 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

In 2016 he died in the Klingenberg district of Höckendorf .
