Ulrich Reimkasten

Ulrich Reimkasten (born January 13, 1953 in Lichtenstein, Saxony ) is a contemporary artist and professor of painting and textile arts at the Burg Giebichenstein Art Academy in Halle . He lives and works in Halle (Saale) .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a pattern draftsman, Reimkasten studied textile design at the University of Applied Arts in Schneeberg from 1971 to 1974, finishing with the graphic reconstruction of a rococo wallpaper for the State Palaces and Gardens of Potsdam-Sanssouci . From 1974 to 1980 he received drawing lessons from the Spanish artist Josep Renau in Berlin-Köpenick . He studied in the department of tapestry design from 1975 to 1980 at the University of Industrial Design in Halle a . a. with Willi Sitte and Inge Götze. His diploma thesis was the 2.50 × 4.70 m large tapestry "Festive Scene", executed by the State Textile and Tapestry Manufactory Halle. In 1980 Ulrich Reimkasten was accepted into the Association of Visual Artists.

After completing his studies, Reimkasten continued to devote himself to tapestry. Together with his wife Antje Müller-Reimkasten he created a. a. the tapestries “Opus 1: Persian Variations” (1982), “The Skin” (1986) and “Archeteppich” (1991). From 1985 to 1988 Reimkasten received a scholarship in Berlin at the Akademie der Künste as a master class student with Herbert Sandberg . In 1990 Reimkasten was a co-founder of the artists' association “Art and Form” and was a board member until 1996.

In 1992 Ulrich Reimkasten was given a teaching position at the Burg Giebichenstein Art College in Halle . In 1995 he was appointed professor in the art department, specializing in painting / textiles.

From 1995 to 1999 Reimkasten realized several architecture-related art projects, including a. in Jena, Magdeburg and Leipzig. From 2003 to 2004 he designed the chapel of St. Elisabeth in the St. Elisabeth and St. Barbara Hospital in Halle (Saale).

Since the turn of the millennium, painting has increasingly been at the center of Reimkasten's work. In an old warehouse in Blücherhof / Klocksin, mostly large-format pictures were created, with strong references to several trips to the Sierra Madre in northern Mexico, the paleolithic caves in France or the ancient Indian calendar (Tzolkin).

Reimkasten is the director of the SEPIA Institute for Textile Arts, which was co-founded in 2010 and within the framework of which numerous textile projects have been realized, e.g. For example, the exhibition “The Halle Tapestry” in Merseburg (2011) and “Luther's Last Journey” (2014), a monumental tapestry for the house where Luther died in Eisleben.

Commissioned work and creation (selection)

Reimkasten carried out various commissioned works, including for building-related art, the most important of which were in Berlin and Halle (Elisabeth chapel in the Elisabeth hospital in Halle ).

He took part in international competitions and exhibitions at home and abroad, u. a. Berlin, Leipzig, Munich, Paris, USA.

Several of Reimkasten's works are in public ownership (Staatliche Museen Prussischer Kulturbesitz zu Berlin, Kunstgewerbemuseum; Oberfinanzdirektion Magdeburg; Friedrich Schiller University Jena ; Chamber of Industry and Commerce Mönchengladbach; Diakoniewerk Halle ; Economic Research Institute Halle).

Awards

In 1995 Reimkasten won the “Art in Architecture” competition for three murals and floor inlays realized in 1996 with Lutz Rudolf for the new building of the law faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena with Lutz Rudolf.

In 2016 Reimkasten received the Halle Art Prize for his "lively, multifaceted work".
