Bernard Tekpetey (born September 3, 1997 in Accra ) is a Ghanaian football player . The winger has been under contract with Ludogorez Razgrad as a loan player from FC Schalke 04 in Bulgaria since the end of July 2020 .

Club career

UniStar Soccer Academy

Tekpetey had never played in a club in Ghana. He was a member of the UniStar Soccer Academy from 2012 to the beginning of 2016 and was not the focus of the Ghanaian Football Association. On the recommendation of the former soccer player Gerald Asamoah , who discovered Tekpetey in Ghana at the end of 2015, he was invited to a trial training session by Oliver Ruhnert , the director of the Knappenschmiede , the Schalke 04 youth academy. The young winger was able to convince in a test match against the professionals of VfL Bochum .

FC Schalke 04

From February 2016 to July 2016 Tekpetey was in the squad of the second team of Schalke, who played in the Football Regionalliga- West in the 2015/16 season . He played his first game on February 12, 2016 in a 2-2 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach's second team . He scored his first two goals on February 20, 2016, the 24th matchday, in the 2-4 defeat against RW Oberhausen . At the end of the second half of the season, Tekpetey had played 16 games, scored four goals and prepared another.

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season he was appointed to the professional squad by coach Markus Weinzierl . The reason for this was also a rule change by the Football and Athletics Association Westphalia (FLVW): The use of non-EU foreigners in the regional league was prohibited. In the friendly against DSC Wanne-Eickel , Tekpetey scored two goals in a 13-0 win. At the training camp in Mittersill , Austria , he scored the winning goal to make it 2-1 in the test match against FC Bologna . Subsequently, Tekpetey suffered an Achilles tendon injury at training camp. From mid-October 2016 he was regularly in the Schalke's professional squad due to injuries to Breel Embolo , Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Franco Di Santo , but was not used. On November 24, 2016, in the fifth group game of the Europa League at home against OGC Nice , Tekpetey made his debut in a competitive game for FC Schalke 04. In Schalke's victory, he took out the penalty that led to the 2-0 final score, and was sent off in stoppage time with yellow-red . On December 17, 2016, the 15th matchday of the Bundesliga in a 1-1 draw against SC Freiburg , he made his Bundesliga debut when he came on for Max Meyer in the 87th minute .

SCR Altach

After his contract with FC Schalke 04 was extended until June 30, 2020, Tekpetey switched to the Austrian Bundesliga club SCR Altach on loan in August 2017 . On September 16, 2017, the eighth matchday of the 2017/18 Bundesliga , he scored the 2-1 lead in the game against SK Rapid Wien . The game ended 2-2. On September 20, 2017, he scored his first cup goal in the second round of the ÖFB Cup in the game against Union Gurten . With a 3: 4 victory, the team reached the last sixteen, where they lost to SK Sturm Graz .

In January 2018, the loan agreement was terminated.

SC Paderborn 07

For the 2018/19 season, Tekpetey moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for newly promoted SC Paderborn 07 , with whom he signed a contract until the end of June 2021. FC Schalke 04 secured a buyback option. Tekpetey established himself as a regular player under Steffen Baumgart and was used in 32 second division games (23 times from the start), in which he scored 10 goals. At the end of the season, the promoted team made it through to the Bundesliga .

Via Düsseldorf to Razgrad

For the 2019/20 season , FC Schalke 04 acquired the transfer rights back to Tekpetey using the buyback option set in the previous year. However, at the beginning of July he did not start the preparation. A few days later, the striker moved to league rivals Fortuna Düsseldorf on loan for two years ; in return, Schalke 04 signed Benito Raman . Tekpetey completed 8 Bundesliga games under head coach Friedhelm Funkel (4 times from the start). After Uwe Rösler took over the team at the end of January, he was only used one more time. At the end of the season Fortuna Düsseldorf was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga.

In the summer break of 2020, Tekpetey publicly stated that he would no longer play under Rösler. He was therefore released to start the preparation . At the end of July the loan was terminated prematurely, whereupon Tekpetey switched to reigning champions Ludogorez Razgrad for two years on loan to Bulgaria .

National team

At the end of December 2016 it was announced that Tekpetey had been nominated by coach Avram Grant in Ghana's preliminary squad for the 2017 African Cup of Nations in Gabon . On January 5, 2017, Grant announced that Tekpetey would be part of the final squad and, like his fellow Schalke player Abdul Rahman Baba, would represent Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations. He made his first international appearance on January 25, 2017, when he came on as a substitute for the group game against Egypt . He played his first game in the starting XI in the game for third place against the selection of Burkina Faso . At the end of the competition, Tekpetey and his team reached fourth place.

Style of play

His former coach for the second team at Schalke 04, Jürgen Luginger , said of Tekpetey that he "lived from his speed, from his agility and speed". In addition, its high game intelligence is praised. He is thought to be lightning fast and has both feet.
