Ulrich Stockmann (* 1. January 1951 in Oebisfelde ) was from 1994 to 2009 MEP for the SPD in the Socialist Group in the European Parliament .

Life and work

After graduating from high school, Stockmann studied urban planning in Weimar (1969–1973), and then worked as a Dipl.-Ing. at the Building Academy for Industrial Area Planning and General Development Planning in Berlin (1973–1975). From 1975 to 1976 he worked in the office of the chief architect of Berlin.

From 1976 to 1982 he studied theology in Naumburg (Saale) and Berlin . Stockmann passed the first theological exam in 1982, the second in 1985. He was ordained a pastor in 1988. From 1988 to 1990 he was a district youth and student pastor in Naumburg.

He is married and has two children.

Political party

In 1989 he joined the Social Democratic Party of the GDR (SDP). Stockmann was co-founder and chairman of the Naumburg local and district association of the SPD. After the district reform in 1994, he became chairman of the Burgenland district association until the district reform in 2007. Stockmann has been a member of the SPD state executive committee of Saxony-Anhalt since 1990 .

Stockmann was a member of the first freely elected People's Chamber in the GDR. Here he was head of the foreign policy working group and deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group.

He was then a member of the German Bundestag from October 1990 to December 1990 . In February 1991 he was sent to the European Parliament as an observer for Saxony-Anhalt , of which he had been a full member since the European elections in July 1994. For the European elections in June 2009, Stockmann left the European Parliament due to his place on the list and the poor performance of the SPD in the federal government.

Stockmann is also a member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism and an alternate member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. He is a member of the delegation to the EU-Chile Joint Parliamentary Committee and the Delegation for relations with Israel. In 2006 Stockmann was a member of the EU election observer mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo .

Stasi state officer

After the dismissal of the Stasi state commissioner for Saxony-Anhalt, Gerhard Ruden , the ruling parties CDU and SPD agreed in November 2010 on Ulrich Stockmann as his successor. Two unsuccessful competitors filed a lawsuit against this and a. in front of the VG Halle, this then stopped the appointment of Stockmann. Due to the subsequent intervention of the state government that the decision should not be made until February 2011 because an interview had to be made up, a referral to the OVG followed. The case is now also before the Federal Constitutional Court.
