Ulrich Zimmerli

Ulrich Zimmerli (born July 2, 1942 in Thun ) is a Bernese lawyer and politician . He taught at the University of Bern for well over two decades and was a representative of the SVP in the Council of States for over ten years . In 2002 Zimmerli attracted more attention when he resigned from the SVP in protest.

Life

Zimmerli received his dissertation in 1978 on the subject of the principle of proportionality in public law - attempt to determine the current position. In 1979 he was a lecturer , 1983 Honorary Professor and in 1987 Professor for Swiss federal and cantonal heads of state and administrative law at the University of Bern . In 2005 he retired . In addition to his teaching activity, Zimmerli was a judge at the Bern Administrative Court (1974–1987) and at the then Insurance Court (1985–1987).

Zimmerli has been a member of the board of directors since 1997 , since 1999 chairman of the board of directors of Berner Versicherung and, after its merger to form the Swiss Allianz Group, he was again a member (from 2001) or chairman (2002–2012) of the board of directors. Zimmerli was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Wifag-Polytype Holding , the parent company of WIFAG Maschinenfabrik AG . During his term of office, he gave up the company's core business and cut three quarters of the workforce, for which Zimmerli was exposed to severe criticism in some cases.

From 1987 to 1999 he sat on the Council of States as an SVP politician , and in 1998 he presided over it. Zimmerli left the SVP on November 18, 2002. One of the reasons he gave for this was that he was ashamed of the party, because with its policy, which had been pursued for years, it tore into everything that he had tried to build up for years as a politician and constitutional and administrative lawyer. He could no longer justify membership “with a conscience”. In 2015 Zimmerli was one of the signatories of the appeal “Switzerland is a constitutional state - No to the enforcement initiative ”.

Zimmerli is married and lives in Muri near Bern .
