Ulrike Feudel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ulrike Feudel (* 1957 ) is professor for theoretical physics and complex systems at the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Sea (ICBM) at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg .

Career

Institute building of the ICBM in Oldenburg

From 1983 to 1987 she worked at the Institute for Geography and Geoecology and then until 1991 at the Central Institute for Cybernetics and Information Processes of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . She received her doctorate in 1985 from the Humboldt University in Berlin with a thesis on structure formation in reaction-diffusion systems with charged particles. From 1992 to 1996 she worked in the Max Planck working group on non-linear dynamics at the Institute for Physics at the University of Potsdam . As a habilitation at the University of Potsdam, she submitted a collection of nine papers on dynamics between regularity and chaos in 1996. The Heisenberg program funded research stays in Potsdam and at the University of Maryland, College Park from 1997 to 2000 . In 2000, she was appointed to the chair of theoretical physics and complex systems at the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) of the University of Oldenburg called . From 1998 to 2001, she cooperated with her predecessor on the chair, Hans-Joachim Schellnhuber , in a DFG collaborative research center on the non-linear dynamics of ocean circulation . Later she was director of the ICBM, where she is responsible for the master's degree in environmental modeling .

She is a member of the editorial board of the scientific journals Mathematical Biosciences and Engineering (since 2003), Nonlinear Processes in Geophysics (since 2004) and the Russian Journal of Nonlinear Dynamics . She has been a member of the scientific advisory board of Chaos magazine since 2007 .

In 2015 she was awarded the MTA Distinguished Guest Scientist Fellowship by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for her project “Critical Transitions in Environmental Systems”.

research

Ulrike Feudel, for example, researches Rössler attractors

Feudel researches in the area of complex systems . On the one hand, she deals conceptually with nonlinear dynamics , stability theory , in particular multistability , extreme events and phase transitions . She was one of the first non-chaotic strange attractors ( English Strange attractor nonchaotic ) studied. She discovered that even low-dimensional non-linear systems can have large numbers of co-existing attractors. She investigated the attractors of systems with quasiperiodicity. This describes vibrations that do not have an exact periodicity , but are determined by several superimposed frequencies that are not in an integer ratio to one another. On the other hand, it transfers the findings to environmental science , for example on predator-prey systems , neurons , algal blooms , or ocean convection, as well as systems of chemical reactions .

In the last few years she has also been investigating socio-technical systems such as the resilience of electricity transport systems. In 2014, the physics meets economics seminar of the young German Physical Society (jDPG) took place at her institute .
