Umawera is a small settlement in the Far North District of Northland on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
Umawera is derived in the Māori language from " uma " and " wera ", which means "burned breast". The place is meant to refer to an event in which a child was seriously injured.
geography
The settlement is located around 25 km northwest of Kaikohe on the Orira River . The New Zealand State Highway 1 , which connects the settlement with Whangarei , which lies around 83 km to the southeast, runs through Umawera . A small side road leads from Umawera to the settlement of Orira , which is about 3 km to the south , which lies on a branch of the Hokianga Harbor , which here still bears the name of the Orira River .
