Free and outdoors (Würzburg)
The free and outside (mostly only U&D ) in Würzburg is a festival that has existed since 1987 and is held once a year on the "Talavera" -Mainwiesen and is the largest of its kind in Bavaria. It joins other free-and-outside - Festivities and last in 2009 reached a visitor number of around 75,000 over the three days of the event.
The continued existence of the festival has been endangered several times over the years, as, for example, as in 2007 and 2008, the weather conditions had led to a massive loss of spectators and the associated slump in income. Only by finding a new main sponsor , Sparda-Bank, in 2009 and the stronger support from the district of Lower Franconia and the city of Würzburg, the U&D secured a somewhat more secure future.
Organization and concept
The U&D has been organized since 1987 by a sponsoring association set up for this purpose and more than 100 volunteers at a time , with Ralf Duggen being the main person in charge. The U&D takes place annually between the end of spring and the beginning of summer on the Würzburg Mainwiesen.
There are two large and various smaller stages on the site, some outdoors and some covered. A variety of other campaigns and offers take place as part of the U&D. There is a series of espresso experiments, an extensive children's program, an afternoon of street music on the premises, a variety show and a number of different game and sales stands. Various charitable organizations are also represented with information stands. In 2009 there was a “U25” stage for the first time, on which bands with an average age under 25 played during the breaks on the large outdoor stage. Under the banner “Free & Inside”, other groups appear after midnight in nearby venues with free admission.
The sponsors of the three-day festival in recent years have included the Sparda-Bank Nürnberg , Distelhäuser , Coca-Cola , Bayern 3 and the Main-Post . The main source of income for the organizer is the sale of drinks due to the free entry to the site. At the entrances, visitors are checked for food they have brought with them without permission.
Most of the performing artists come from Germany, many of them directly from the regional environment. In addition, a large number of internationally successful acts have appeared on the U&D, in recent years artists such as Aloha from Hell , Audrey , Get Well Soon , Kashiwa Daisuke , Mama's Gun , Markus Rill , Ólafur Arnalds , Reamonn and The Robocop Kraus .
