history

The Sparda-Bank Nürnberg was founded on December 22nd, 1930 by 104 railway employees in the congress hall of the Nuremberg main train station under the name Reichsbahn-Spar- und Loankasse. The Reichsbahn chief inspector Johann Wolf was appointed as the first chairman of the board.

Shortly after the establishment of the cooperative, the number of members multiplied, so that the loan office had 1,350 customers by the end of the 1931 financial year. In 1932, the Reichsbahn guaranteed the liability of the savings deposits, which further increased the growth of the cooperative, which was originally set up as a self-help institution for mutual support. While business operations almost came to a standstill during the Second World War, the Reichsbahn-Spar- und Kreditkasse was able to record strong growth in the loan and building finance business, especially in the following post-war years. After the wage packet was replaced by electronic payment accounts in many places at the end of the 1950s, thousands of railway employees opened their free current accounts at the Nuremberg-based loan office.

Due to a change in the statutes, the bank also opened up to public service employees in the 1970s. In the course of this amendment to the statutes, the Nuremberg Railway Savings and Loan Fund became the Nuremberg Sparda Bank. A few years later, the cooperative credit institute expanded its customer groups again; since then, all wage, salary or pension recipients can open a current account with free account management. Thanks to these decisions, the bank has been able to continue its strong growth path to the present day. In 1998, 100,000 customers subscribed to membership shares; by 2005, this figure had risen to more than 145,000 customers. Currently the number of members is around 220,000.

In 1979 the cooperative credit institute opened the first branch outside of Nuremberg's city limits in Würzburg. This was followed by branches in Bayreuth, Aschaffenburg, Schweinfurt and Fürth throughout Northern Bavaria. In the meantime (as of October 2017) Sparda-Bank is represented with a total of 17 branches in the entire business area.

Sparda-Bank Nürnberg presents itself as a provider of an omnichannel strategy. In addition to the classic branch network, there is also the option of doing banking online, by phone or using the banking app. Furthermore, there has been a cooperation with the fintech provider Barzahlen.de since April 2017 , which also enables customers to withdraw or deposit money in the supermarket.
