Markus Rill (born March 20, 1970 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German singer-songwriter .

Life

Rill was born on March 20, 1970 in Frankfurt / Main. He grew up in Goldbach near Aschaffenburg and was multiple German wrestling champion in his youth and multiple German team champion with AC Bavaria Goldbach between 1987 and 1993. He studied English and social studies at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . During his studies he spent a year in Austin, Texas , where he studied American music in the tradition of Bob Dylan , Townes van Zandt and Guy Clark . He had his first solo appearances on open mic evenings.

After returning to Germany, Rill opened a concert by his role model Townes van Zandt and self- published his debut album Gunslinger's Tales (1997). After numerous appearances all over Germany, including with Hazeldine , Steve Wynn and John Wesley Harding , The Devil And The Open Road was released by Blue Rose in 1999 . In 2001, Nowhere Begins followed with Music Network. In 2004 Rill first recorded with US musicians in Nashville . The album Hobo Dream was produced by guitarist Duane Jarvis . In the same year, The Hobo Companion was self-published , a collection of live recordings, demos, radio recordings and cover versions. In May 2006 he released The Price Of Sin , also recorded in Nashville. Another Nashville work followed in January 2008, The Things That Count on Blue Rose. In November 2008, Rill released Bag Of Tricks, a collection of covers with songs by Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash , Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley . In March 2011 the album Wild, Blue & True was released , which contains 13 new songs with his band The Troublemakers, which consists of Felix Leitner on guitar, Chris Reiss on bass, Aggi Berger on drums and Jan Reinelt on keyboard.

Since 2007 Rill has been a regular finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. Several of his songs made it to the finals in the Americana and Folk categories of the competition, with judges including Tom Waits , Jerry Lee Lewis , Bonnie Raitt and Ray Davies . In February 2013, Markus Rill & The Troublemakers' My Rocket Ship was released on Blue Rose. The American music magazine No Depression praised the album as “Markus Rill's best work to date” and judged “Rill shows great depth as a songwriter, bandleader and producer”. In December 2013, Rill self- published Late Night Drive . The reviews are also positive for the introspective solo album.

In January 2015, the Süddeutsche Zeitung published a large portrait of the musician, who now lives in Munich, with the title: “Der Dylan vom Glockenbach”: “When Rill sings, when he gently rocks his foot and closes his eyes, then he dives a whole world, the world of rock'n'roll. All he needs is a guitar, subtle picking and his voice. Terrific. "

In April 2016 "Dream Anyway" by Markus Rill & The Troublemakers was released on Blue Rose Records. The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung wrote on July 24th: “A man can write songs like not many others. With just a few guitar chords and well-chosen words, he can tell stories that seem like short stories. And he can bring these stories to life with a distinctive organ, with beautifully sanded-on vocal cords, which make you think of far too long nights in smoky music bars. "In the" Worth listening "section, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reviewed the album on April 14th:" What Rill is doing is not without risk. There is little more embarrassing than wanting America and not being able to. [...] But Rill is one of the good guys, especially with his idiosyncrasy. "No Depression, the American journal for Americana and Roots Music judges:" All of Rill's songs are really stories put to music; but drawing on the likes of John Mellancamp and even Roger McGuinn for inspiration at times; the results are often fabulous - try the darkly beautiful The Pauper's Daughter or perhaps The Hands of Mercy to hear a musical craftsman at work. "

On October 14, 2016, Markus Rill was the only artist to receive two awards at the German Country Prize 2016 in Bergheim. He received the award for "Singer of the Year 2016", and Dream Anyway was also named "Album of the Year 2016".

In January 2018, Blue Rose Records released Rill's first double album "Getting Into Trouble (20 Years Of Gunslinging)". The title is an allusion to the past 20 years since Rill's debut album "Gunslinger's Tales" from 1997. CD1 of "Getting Into Trouble" contains eleven new recordings, including new, partly textually and musically modified versions of some of the songs on Rill's first and second CD included (Trouble With The Law, Eye For An Eye, Jenny). CD 2, "20 Years Of Gunslinging", contains pieces that were not previously available on Blue Rose (only on private publications in small editions or side projects). The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung describes Rill as a "gifted songwriter" and the double album as "very worth listening to" (FAZ, January 20, 2018).

In May 2019 "Songland" was released on Blue Rose. The album contains 15 songs and was recorded by Markus Rill & The Troublemakers in the 7V studio in Bockenem / Lower Saxony. The album contains some songs with soul influences and was very well received:

"Even after 20 years in the saddle, Rill gets a little better with every ride"

- Christian Riethmüller : > FAZ Rhein-Main-Zeitung

"The lyrics: They are a particular strength of the composer Markus Rill, here again and especially."

- Alice Natter : Main Post
