Umtshezi (also uMtshezi , English Umtshezi Local Municipality ) was a municipality in the South African district of Uthukela in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The administrative seat of the municipality was Estcourt . BD Dlamini was the last mayor. The ANC last provided the majority in the local council. The church went up in 2016 in the Inkosi Langalibalele municipality .

The name of the community comes from the isiZulu name for the Bushman River . In 2011 the community had 83,153 inhabitants. It covered an area of ​​1972 square kilometers.

Umtshezi was in the western part of the province. In the northwest, Umtshezi bordered the communities Alfred Duma and Okhahlamba , in the northeast also on Alfred Duma and in the east on Msinga . To the southeast of the parish was Mpofana and to the southwest was Imbabazane , with whom it merged in 2016. The distance to Durban was about 165 kilometers to the southeast. Johannesburg is 400 kilometers northwest of what was then the municipality. The N3 , which connects Durban and Johannesburg, runs through the western part of what was then the municipality. The towns in the parish were Estcourt - the center of the parish - and Weenen .

economy

The economic activities in Umtshezi were concentrated in agriculture, manufacturing industry and tourism. The community offered good conditions for industrial production. In terms of transport, Umtshezi was well connected via the N3 and the Durban – Johannesburg railway line. The electrical infrastructure and the water supply via Wagendrift Dam were also well established and inexpensive. However, a migration of industry to larger centers could not be stopped. Regionally important companies in the municipality were:

  • Eskort Bacon Factory , a sausage and meat producer
  • Nestlé and
  • Masonite , a wood processing company

Glass, nylon, and textile products were also made in the community and corn was grown. About 60 percent of the manufacturing industry processed the agricultural products, mainly meat and dairy products.

Umtshezi was near the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site . The scenic attractiveness with mountains, river valleys ( uThukela River and Bushman River) offered the community great potential for tourism. There were opportunities for ecotourism especially in the catchment area of ​​the Bushman River .
