The Environmental Center Dresden is located in Dresden in the Wilsdruffer Vorstadt district and has been home to numerous initiatives, associations and small companies since 1994.

General

Many environmental associations and groups have their headquarters in the building, such as the Green League Dresden / Upper Elbe Valley. But other associations, initiatives and small companies that are committed to education, social issues and environmentally friendly products and technologies are also active in the company. The Dresden Environmental Library and the BrennNessel restaurant can also be found in the Environmental Center . The event rooms of the house are used by numerous groups for lectures, discussions, seminars or meetings.

The non-profit association Umweltzentrum Dresden eV is the sponsor of the house of the same name. He set up the environmental center, manages the building and coordinates the cooperation in the house. The association operates the environmental library in the environmental center, the wild bird sanctuary in Dresden-Kaditz and a branch in Dresden-Prohlis , the Alte Ziegelei environmental education center . It also offers a diverse environmental education program for children and young people. In addition, the association has been committed to environmental protection in the Saxon state capital with its own projects since it was founded in 1990. The Verein Umweltzentrum Dresden eV has initiated several projects for the international exchange of experiences in the environmental sector, for example in cooperation with partners from Poland, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and China.

The wild bird collection station of the environmental center is located on the premises of the Dresden-Kaditz sewage treatment plant . Up to 800 injured or helpless wild birds are given medical care here every year, cared for and housed in a professional and species-appropriate manner. After their recovery, the birds are released back into nature. The station takes in all wild, native bird species. Patients include owls, birds of prey, storks and woodpeckers as well as pigeons, water birds and songbirds. Most of the station's employees are volunteers.

In June 2013, the Äußere Matthäusfriedhof in Dresden-Friedrichstadt was added as a new branch .

history

At the end of 1989 committed Dresden citizens founded the Schützengasse interest group to preserve the baroque ensemble of buildings at Schützengasse 16-18, which was ailing and threatened with demolition. With the idea of creating an ecological center at this point, the interest group found approval not only among the citizens but also with the Dresden city council in 1990 . In the years 1993–1997 the buildings were ecologically renovated . The renovation of the environmental center was supported by the city of Dresden, the Free State of Saxony and the German Federal Environment Foundation . The house is a listed building .
