Plant description

The uneven-leaved bedstraw is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 5 to 20 cm. Due to its short runners , it forms grassy stands. The rising stem , thread-like at the base, is square, branched and forms whirling leaves at intervals of 3 cm . These are 15 mm long, 2 mm wide, obovate to lanceolate and have a long dark tip and usually a downwardly curled, short hairy edge.

The flowers stand together to few in loose umbels, which protrude from the Blattquirlen. The white to yellowish-white corolla is up to 4 mm wide, the calyx is indistinct. The smooth fruits disintegrate in half.

Flowering time is from July to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22, 44 or 66.

Occurrence

The uneven-leaved bedstraw is often found in the Central and Southern European mountains and the Alps. It colonizes lime and nutrient-rich soils in stony meadows and rock crevices at altitudes over 1000 m. It occurs in lawns, rock and debris in high mountains and in forests and bushes in dry and warm locations. In the Alps it is a character species of the order Seslerietalia, but also occurs in societies of the association Thlaspion rotundifolii or as a scoop in those of the association Epilobion fleischeri. In the Swabian Alb it occurs in the Coronillo-Pinetum of the Erico-Pinion association or in Sesleria- rich societies of the Xerobromion association.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Galium anisophyllon subsp. anisophyllon : It occurs from France to Bulgaria and in the Carpathian Mountains.
  • Galium anisophyllon subsp. plebeium (Boiss. & Heldr.) Honorable. (Syn .: Galium plebeium Boiss. & Heldr. ): It occurs on the southern Balkan peninsula.
