action

Episode 1 - "The Rattling" ( カ タ カ タ , Katakata )

Script and direction : Keita Amemiya

The young, attractive accountant Kanako says goodbye to her newly divorced fiancé Akira, whom she wants to marry in two weeks, and walks to her apartment in the dark when she notices a strange rattling noise in front of her apartment building. A short time later, an earring falls down and she picks it up. She looks up and is suddenly hit on the head by something heavy. She then loses consciousness.

When she wakes up again, reality and perception merge in a surreal daydream. The city seems deserted; Kanako only sees a mysterious little taciturn girl who once threw herself from the parapet of the meter-high residential complex. The confused Kanako enters her apartment, slightly injured, where she is soon called by her completely broken up fiancé, who just barely escaped a knife attack by his ex-wife and urgently admonishes Kanako not to leave the apartment. A little intimidated, she investigates strange noises in her bathroom when she is suddenly attacked by a black-haired, red-clad woman with wide eyes. In panic, she flees from her apartment to the deserted police station from the disfigured woman who is following her. Then the young girl appears again, who lures her back into the house, but disappears again without a trace. Kanako is attacked here by the female monster and ultimately captured.

During this attack, Kanako wakes up seriously injured in the local hospital and learns what happened at the time. She was once the victim of an unknown woman who fell down the parapet with suicidal intent and collided with her. The force of the impact made it necessary to operate for several hours to separate the two bodies. Since she has recovered almost completely, she is allowed to leave the infirmary. She immediately sets off to visit the crime scene, but only finds out that she was once attacked and pushed down by the monster, and was also hit by the falling body at the same time.

Episode 2 - "Steel" ( 鋼 - は が ね - , Hagane )

Written and directed by Takuji Suzuki

The dreary life of the shy auto mechanic Sekiguchi suddenly changes when his boss asks him to go out with his attractive sister Hagane. The skeptical Sekiguchi agrees, but meets the young woman, whom he only knows from a photo, when picking up the house. Your upper body is completely covered by a potato sack tied at the waist with a cord; only the legs are visible. Despite this bitter surprise, at the insistence of his boss, he does not cancel the bizarre rendezvous and drives off with his mute companion. On the way, they stop at a rest area where the stunned Sekiguchi tries to question Hagane when she suddenly runs away and falls into a nearby body of water. Sekiguchi rescues the strange creature from the water and takes it back to his apartment.

Here he offers her dry clothes, which the mysterious Hagane emphatically rejects. She takes a liking to the reserved Sekiguchi, and an erotic passion develops until the excited Sekiguchi makes a mistake and loosens the cord of the linen potato sack. He discovers that her covered torso is made of bloody pieces of meat and steel. The angry Hagane reacts completely beside herself, devastates Sekiguchi's apartment and flees to her brother with strange noises.

The next day, the young mechanic, who is no longer doing his job, is harassed by the woman. With all possible means he tries to evade the threatening affair, brutally beats her and throws her down a slope, but without turning her off. She succeeds in confronting her loved one and killing him tearfully during a love game. At the end of the film, her brother, Tetsu's workshop owner, burns all traces at the scene and then goes back to his everyday chores. There is a sign on his workshop that says that a young mechanic is wanted, even without prior knowledge.

Episode 3 - "The Legacy" ( う け つ ぐ も の , Uketsugu mono )

Written and directed by Keisuke Toyoshima

After his parents divorced, little Michio and his mother Saeko moved from Tokyo to live with his grandmother in the countryside. The old lady, who is bedridden to the house, has been keeping a horrific secret in her confused head since the disappearance of her seven-year-old child Masaiko. However, her mental illness stems from the fact that she once killed her own child, driven by a child-murdering ghost. With the sudden appearance of her daughter and her grandson, who is very similar to Masaiko, she fears a repetition of her sin. She tries unsuccessfully to persuade Saeko to return to the big city.

On the very first day, Michio noticed that unusual things were going on in the house. He sees Masaiko's spirit and is visibly uncomfortable with his grandmother. When his mother also behaves strangely the next day, after discovering a scroll in the attic of a locked and secured barn that she has changed in some way, a real nightmare begins for little Michio. His mother soon chokes him on the neck, the resulting marks are discovered by Kaji, a friend of mine, who then confronts her. After dismissing any guilt, Kaji continues, albeit with a queasy feeling. But there is no escape for little Michio. Although his grandmother still tries to help him, i.e. to separate him from his mother, at the end of the film he becomes a victim of Saekos, who holds him motionless in her arms.

Reviews

"Although rather reserved in its pictures, the film achieves a high degree of effectiveness by very skillfully addressing human primal fears, whereby it pointedly places the demonization of women at the center of the stories."
