history

Damascus University is the oldest university in the country. It was created in 1923 through the merger of a medical school (founded in 1903) and a law school (founded in 1913). Until the University of Aleppo was founded in 1958, it was known as the Syrian University and, according to its website, is now divided into 19 faculties. The individual departments are housed in buildings on both sides of Filasteen-Straße in the center of Neustadt.

The courses are taught almost exclusively in Arabic. The affiliated institute for Arabic language offers language courses for non-Arabic speaking foreigners.
