Unreal Tournament 3 (formerly Unreal Tournament 2007), also UT3, is a futuristic first-person shooter , the fourth part of the Tournament series of the Unreal game series and the direct successor to Unreal Tournament 2004 . The game was developed by Epic Games and was released for Windows on November 12, 2007 . The version for the PlayStation 3 was released in the USA in December 2007. A European version followed in February 2008. A version for the Xbox 360 was released on July 4, 2008. It was then released in the rest of the world on July 7, 2008. A Linux version was originally planned, but in December 2010 the developer announced that it would not be released. This makes Unreal Tournament 3 the first title in the series that was not released for Linux. A version for Macintosh has also been announced since 2007, but has not yet been released. The game uses the Unreal Engine 3 and thus runs on different platforms and operating systems.

Game modes

In addition to the engine, the game modes have also been changed. The Assault , Bombing Run , Double Domination , Invasion , Last Man Standing and Mutant modes have been removed and Onslaught has been replaced by the new Warfare mode . Another new addition is duel .

  • Deathmatch
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Capture the flag
  • duel
  • Warfare: In warfare mode, similar to the UT2004 game mode Onslaught , a network of so-called power nodes must be built up and a power core must be destroyed in the enemy base. Occasionally, as in the Assault game mode, small missions are available that should or must help with this (an example of this would be that by holding a certain power node for a certain time, the opposing power core can be submerged). In the base of every team there is the ball that takes a power node immediately when you carry it (use of vehicles is only possible to a limited extent). A ball dropped when a player dies can only be brought back to the base of its owner by the other team by suicide.
  • Vehicle CTF: Like Capture the Flag , but with vehicles (without translocator - with hoverboard ).

In addition to the multiplayer mode, there is also a single player campaign, which, similar to Unreal Tournament 2004, consists of individual battles with bots and occasional video sequences.

Guns, powerups and vehicles

Compared to Unreal Tournament 2004 there are no new weapons, but the old ones have been modified. Elements from earlier Unreal games have been taken up again at various points: For example, the rocket launcher now (as in Unreal Tournament ) has the ability to use its rockets as grenades. The Shieldgun was replaced by the Impact Hammer and the Minigun by the Stinger Minigun , while the Lightning Gun was canceled.

The weapons therefore include:

  • Impact hammer
  • Enforcer
  • Bio rifle
  • Shock rifle
  • Link Gun
  • Stinger minigun
  • Flak cannon
  • Rocket Launcher
  • Sniper rifle
  • Longbow AVRIL
  • Redeemer

Furthermore, depending on the current game mode, players can cover greater distances faster with the Translocator (a kind of teleporter ) known from older Unreal games or with the newly added hoverboard (a kind of futuristic skateboard ). However, both objects prevent the simultaneous use of other weapon systems.

Powerup

The power-ups are various bonuses that, like weapons and ammunition, must be collected. Depending on the type, these are applied automatically, work over a certain period of time or can be specifically activated like normal weapons. They either increase your own resilience, double the damage done or grant limited special abilities, such as a certain number of higher jumps.

vehicles

All vehicles known from the predecessor were taken over, but modified.

  • Cicada
  • Goliath
  • Hellbender
  • Leviathan
  • manta
  • paladin
  • Raptor
  • Scorpion
  • SPMA
  • Stealth bender
  • Darkwalker
  • Fury
  • Nemesis
  • Nightshade
  • Scavenger
  • viper

In addition, different stationary turrets can be found on different maps, some of which can be moved to a limited extent on given rails.

Frames

The original version was published in Austria and Switzerland with a PEGI rating of 18+. It is indicated in Germany .

In Germany, only a defused version with an age rating of 16 and over is available, in which all blood and splatter effects have been removed. It is worth noting that this applies only to the actual game, while in the cut scenes and the depiction of blood. Ä. Was retained unchanged.

Reactions

Unreal Tournament 3 received positive media reviews, even if the lack of innovations was often criticized. The gaming platform Gamona.de judges: "Stagnation at the highest level: Technically brilliant, the furious action-shooting lets real innovations painfully lack" (PC version, rating 86%) and "Successful console implementation of the online shooter cracker. If you are into action-packed multiplayer battles, you should definitely grab it here! ”(PS3 version, 88% rating). With 90%, Gamestar rated: "As always, but nicer, faster, more action-packed." (PC version).
