The Unterberg refuge is a refuge on the Unterberg in the Lower Austrian municipality of Muggendorf . It stands around 150 meters below and on the south side of the summit of the 1342 meter high Unterberg in the Gutenstein Alps . The hut is owned by the Austrian Tourist Club (ÖTK) and is managed all year round.

The Maria Einsiedl chapel, also popularly known as “Maria im Thier”, is located almost 200 m to the southwest. It houses a copy of the Mariazell statue of Our Lady and is visited by numerous pilgrims on the way to Mariazell over the Unterberg.

history

The construction of the Gutenstein Railway , opened in 1877, opened up the Piesting and Triesting valleys . The tourist club founded in Vienna in 1869 then organized day trips to the area and marked hiking routes. On July 21, 1884, the Pernitz section was founded. This then opened up the Myra Falls in Muggendorf and with a grant of 1,300 guilders from the municipality of Pernitz , a hut was built on "one of the most beautiful panoramic mountains in the Kronland", the Unterberg, the opening ceremony of which took place on August 22, 1886.
