The desert is about 3 km west of the Saulgruber district of Altenau in the valley of the Halbammer on the Königsstrasse, which connects Altenau with Trauchgau , at an altitude of 836 m above sea level. NHN .
history
In 1845, Count Dürckheim from Steingaden acquired the area on the eastern slope of the Trauchberge and built a forester's house, a sawmill and charcoal burner huts there in 1849 for the extraction of charcoal. In 1860 Dürkheim sold the area to the state, which set up a forestry office there. King Ludwig II had a royal house built in the valley of the Halbammer upstream from Unternogg, for which the forester's house served as a supply station.
As early as 1900 an inn was operated in the forester's house. Officially the place was called Sophienthal at that time, but in common parlance it kept its old name Unternogg.

The few buildings are on both sides of Königsstraße, the forester's house to the south, two other buildings to the north.
