Upeneus pori is a marine fish from the mullet familythat is found in the Red Sea and the western Indian Ocean from Oman to Madagascar . The speciesimmigratedto the eastern Mediterranean through the Suez Canal ( Lesseps migration ).

features

Upeneus pori grows to a maximum of 22 centimeters, but usually stays at 18 centimeters. The fish are relatively elongated. The body height is 21 to 24% of the standard length at the beginning of the first dorsal fin and 20 to 22% of the standard length at the anus .

Upeneus pori has a red-brown to gray basic color, the back above the lateral line is dark and patterned with gray or red-brown dots. Some specimens show a dark brown or red band running down from the eye. The two barbels are white or yellowish. There is no longitudinal stripe on the sides of the body or it is only slightly indicated. The first dorsal fin is unpigmented. The caudal fin is patterned by 11 to 15 stripes, the upper caudal fin lobe shows 4 to 6 red-brown stripes, the lower 5 to 9 red-brown or gray stripes.

Way of life

Upeneus pori occurs near the coast over sandy and muddy soils. The fish usually stay at depths of up to 20 meters. Their diet consists mainly of crustaceans and bristle worms .
