Upptalk (formerly Yuilop ) was a chat - service for smartphones and tablets . The service enables users to call and text free of charge around the world, regardless of whether the recipient is also using Upptalk. The software is available for Android , iOS , Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile . The service was discontinued and even its domain abandoned in 2017.

Upptalk was founded by the former Simyo managing director Jochen Doppelhammer in 2011 and is headquartered in Barcelona . The app is available in over 200 countries, including Germany and the United States . It is used by around ten million users.

In July 2013 Upptalk received around nine million dollars in financing from investors Nauta Capital, Shortcut Ventures GmbH, Bright Capital and the Spanish government.

Upptalk's services are divided into two main categories:

  • Calls and SMS to other Upptalk users via VoIP and IM.
  • Calls and SMS to mobile and landline phones as well as virtual numbers such as B. from Skype or Google Voice, via Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).

Functions

Upptalk numbers can be reached via normal calls (PSTN) and SMS from any mobile or landline phone. Users can use their Upptalk number on all devices with Internet access (IP). Telephone calls and chats with other Upptalk users are free. In contrast to other VoIP providers, Upptalk does not charge any fees for communication outside of its own network. A virtual credit is used for calls and SMS to landline and mobile phones , which the user can collect free of charge by using the app or various promotional offers. Users in the USA can make national calls and SMS without having to use credit. Other Upptalk functions include instant messaging , group chats and the ability to share photos and your own location. Competitors include Skype , Viber and Google Voice.

It used to be possible to get a virtual mobile phone number via the yuilop.me website and to use it on different devices with internet access without being tied to a network operator or SIM card.

From version 2 this is no longer possible and only possible directly in the app itself.

Upptalk points

Calls and SMS to other Upptalk users are free and unlimited. Calls and SMS to cell phones and landlines consume Upptalk points. These are won through the following actions:

  • Invite friends to sign up for Upptalk.
  • Use of an online offer such as B. Downloading partner apps, completing a survey, shopping online or signing up for a product test.
  • Watching short promotional videos.
  • Redeeming a voucher code that was raffled off via Upptalk's Facebook or Twitter account.
  • Use of the app, e.g. B. Receive chat messages from other Upptalk users

It is also possible to purchase credits with real money.

The number of points required for calls to a mobile or landline phone depends on the destination country.

safety

Yuilop uses 2048-bit encryption to encrypt data exchange and call signaling via any transport medium ( WLAN , 2G , 3G , 4G ). A STARTTLS extension is used via a transport layer security protocol.

In November 2012 the web portal golem.de announced that Yuilop was transmitting messages unencrypted, contrary to the information provided by the developer. According to Yuilop, only the iOS version was affected and the problem has been resolved.
