The Urberg is a 213 meter high mountain in the area of the city of Bad Iburg in Lower Saxony .

location

The Urberg is part of the Teutoburg Forest . It is located northwest of the center of Bad Iburg and southwest of the Dörenberg , the highest point in this part of the Teutoburg Forest. To the north is the 310 meter high Grafensundern . To the northwest lies the municipality of Hagen am Teutoburg Forest , to the north the city of Georgsmarienhütte . The Urberg extends from the southeast to the northwest. In the north-west it reaches the border with the state of North Rhine-Westphalia near Holperdorp, a farming community in the Tecklenburger Land belonging to the municipality of Lienen . The Sunderbach flows on the north side. The Urberg is accessible by hiking trails.

geology

The Urberg is together with the eastern elevations Limberg (194.3 meters) and Hohnsberg (241.9 meters) part of the so-called Second Teutoburg Forest Ridge, made of sandstone from the Lower Cretaceous , the Osning sandstone . At Urberg there are two former sandstone quarries, one in the western area and another in the middle area.

colonization

The Jägerhof am Urberg, half-timbered building founded on June 12, 1847
The Wilhelm-Westmeyer- Weg is named after the composer who was born in Bad Iburg

The north side of the Urberg is wooded; the south side populated in parts.

From Hagener Strasse in Bad Iburg, Landesstrasse 96, Urberg is accessible to the west through the street "Am Urberg" and the Robert-Hülsemann-Strasse south of it, named after the Bad Iburger honorary citizen, businessman and writer Robert Hülsemann (1868 –1950) is named. Because of the sunny and quiet location on the south side of the Urberg, both streets are preferred residential streets. There is a traditional restaurant on the Amtsweg, which is popular with hikers. The half-timbered building bears the inscription of the construction in 1847 on the gable.

On the south side of the Urberg on Robert-Hülsemann-Strasse was the St. Anna Mothers' Sanatorium run by Caritas and looked after by Catholic nuns. After the 1997 health reform, the number of spa applications fell; the occupancy fell from 93 percent to 28 percent. In November 1998 the sanatorium was closed. At times it was used as temporary accommodation for residents of old people's homes whose homes were being renovated. After attempts to sell the building complex had failed, the decision was made to demolish the former sanatorium. This happened from July 2007. The site was planned over and designated as the "Südlicher Urberg" building area with 25 residential properties.

On the Urberg, the Wilhelm-Westmeyer-Weg was named after the composer Wilhelm Westmeyer (1829-1880) who was born in Bad Iburg .

Viticulture on the Urberg

Since 2018 there has been one of the first vineyards in Lower Saxony on the south side of the Urberg. This vineyard area is the only hillside location recognized as such in Lower Saxony. 5000 vines grow on 1.5 hectares. The three varieties Helios (1700 vines) Solaris (2500 plants) and the red variety Regent (800 vines) are grown. These three varieties belong to the so-called fungus-resistant grape varieties, so they get by with a significantly reduced amount of pesticides. The first harvest took place in 2019.
