The Uri-I Dam is located on the Jhelam River in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .
The dam was completed in 1997 and is used to generate electricity.
It is located in Pir Panjal in the Jhelam breakthrough valley. The town of Baramulla is 16 km east, the small town Uri 14 km west-southwest of the dam. The barrier structure is a 93.5 m long gravity dam with a foundation height of 30 m. The dam wall has nine gates, which are designed for a flood discharge of 2264 m³ / s. The dam dams the river into a 13 hectare reservoir. Due to the low effective storage capacity of 309,000 m³, the power plant functions as a run-of-river power plant . To the left of the dam, part of the river water is channeled through a 10.64 km long inlet tunnel (head race tunnel) to the cavern power station ( ⊙ ). A 2 km long tail race tunnel not far from Uri ( ⊙ ) leads the water back to the river.
The power plant has four turbines of 120 MW each. The fall height is 252 m. The average annual output is 2587 million kWh.
Upstream of the Uri I dam is the Lower Jhelum dam , and downstream is the Uri II dam .
