Uriel Weinreich ( Yiddish אוריאל ווײַנרײַך Uriel Vaynraykh [urˈiɛl ˈvaɪ̯nraɪ̯x] ) (born May 23, 1926 in Wilno ; † March 30, 1967 in New York ) was an American linguist .

Life

Uriel Weinreich was the son of the linguist Max Weinreich . The Weinreich family emigrated to the USA in 1940. Uriel Weinreich had been at Columbia University since 1951 and became Dean of the Faculty of Linguistics in 1957 . Weinreich's research areas were Yiddish and sociolinguistics . He made an important contribution to language contact research with his font Languages ​​in Contact . There he developed the classic definition of interference as the deviation of a speaker from the norms of two languages ​​that come into contact with each other, i.e. as a problem for the speaker.

With his programmatic essay Is a structural dialectology possible? from 1954 Weinreich is considered one of the pioneers of structuralism in dialectology .

Uriel Weinreich was the initiator of the LCAAJ (Language and Culture Archive of Ashkenazic Jewry) project, which he led from 1959 until his death. It was continued by Marvin Herzog . The LCAAJ is an extraordinary resource for researching Yiddish and the culture of Ashkenazi Judaism . It consists of 5755 hours of tape recordings of interviews with Yiddish-speaking informants, recorded between 1959 and 1972, as well as approximately 100,000 pages of transcripts of the language material.
