Career

Välbe, who started for Dünamo Tallinn, began his sports career at the time of Estonia's detachment from the Soviet Union, he made his international debut for the Soviet Union as part of the Cross-Country World Cup on January 7, 1989 in Kawgolowo . With tenth place he immediately won his first World Cup points. However, it was not until March 9, 1991 in Falun before he started again in the World Cup. Välbe achieved his best individual result of his career with ninth place over 30 km in free style and thus also rank 35 in the overall ranking of the 1990/91 season .

For the 1991/92 Olympic season , Välbe was permanently included in the squad, but clearly missed the points in all three World Cups before the games. At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , he started in four competitions. In the individual over 10 km he finished 28th, over 30 km he was 33rd after the race. In the relay competition, he reached tenth place together with Andrus Veerpalu , Jaanus Teppan and Elmo Kassin . In the two World Cups after the games, Välbe lagged well behind the world's best.

In the 1992/93 World Cup season too , Välbe remained unlucky and without points in all World Cups. Välbe remained in the World Cup squad. At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , Välbe also started, but could not repeat the performances from Albertville and finished the 10 km individual race in 42nd place and the 30 km individual race in 41st place.

For the 1994/95 season , Välbe only started at the World Cup in Kiruna , where he finished 80th. Also at his other starts in the Continental Cup and at FIS races in Ilomantsi and Pello in Finland he was unsuccessful and ended his active cross-country skiing career after the season.

After the end of his career, Välbe got a job as a ski technician in Estonia, where he initially looked after Andrus Veerpalu and Jaak Mae , after their careers he switched to the Russian service team for cross-country skiers.

Välbe was married to the Russian cross-country skier Jelena Valerjewna Välbe . Through their child together and his work as service technicians in Russian cross-country skiing, the two maintain regular contact.
