Scientific name
Urocystales
R. Bauer & Oberw.

The Urocystales are a group of the smut fungi (Ustilaginomycotina). All representatives are parasites on flowering plants . They have few common features, all representatives with the exception of Mycosyrinx form haustoria and a similar septal pore apparatus.

Systematics

As a monophyletic group, the Urocystales form an order of the Ustilaginomycetes .

The urocystales themselves are described by Begerow et al. (2006) subdivided as follows:

  • Doassansiopsaceae Begerow, R. Bauer & Oberw.
    • Doassansiopsis (Setch.) Dietel. They form complex spore balls with a central mass of pseudoparenchymatic cells surrounded by a layer of light-colored teliospores and an outer cortex of sterile cells.
  • Mycosyringaceae R. Bauer & Oberw.
    • Mycosyrinx Beck. The representatives form paired teliospores and parasitize members of the Vitaceae family. Mature septa have no pores.
  • Urocystaceae Begerow, R. Bauer & Oberw. This family includes morphologically different genera, but all have colored teliospores. Most species form the teliospores in balls. There are both holo- and phragmobasidia. Host plants are both single and dicotyledonous plants.
  • Fereydouniaceae S. Nasr, MR Soudi, HDT Nguyen, M. Lutz & M. Piątek: yeast-like mushrooms from Iran with only the genus Fereydounia . Newly described in 2014.
