Uromyces ferganensis is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of sweet grasses of the genus Stipa . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It iswidespread in the Palearctic .
features
Macroscopic features
Uromyces ferganensis can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.
Microscopic features
The mycelium of Uromyces ferganensis grows as with all Uromyces TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. The golden to cinnamon-brown uredospores of the fungus are 21–27 × 21–27 µm in size, mostly spherical and spiky. The golden teliospores are unicellular, usually ovoid to spherical and 21–30 × 21–24 µm in size.
distribution
The known distribution area of Uromyces ferganensis includes the CIS countries and Morocco . More recent evidence comes from Iran on Stipa caucasica and Stipa holoserica .
ecology
The host plants of Uromyces ferganensis are the feather grasses Stipa barbata and Stipa lessingiana . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a cycle of development of which only the host of Telien and Uredien have been described so far; Telien, Uredien, Spermogonia and Aecien could not be assigned to the species.
