Ursel Berger (born 1947 ) is a German art historian and museum director.

Life

Berger began studying art history in 1967; she received her doctorate in 1975 with a thesis on Andrea Palladio's early work at Munich University under Norbert Huse . She is co-author of the Braunschweig bronze catalog and published on the Dutch Renaissance sculptors Johan Gregor van der Schardt and Willem van Tetrode . In 1977 she began a traineeship at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin . When she took over the management of the Georg Kolbe Museum in Berlin in 1978, her main field of work became 20th century sculpture and in particular the work of Georg Kolbe . She was the director of the Georg Kolbe Museum until the end of 2012.

Berger has organized well over 100 exhibitions with the associated publications. The catalog for the exhibition on Aristide Maillol is a major work on the French sculptor. Berger doubts the authenticity of the foundry signatures on around 200 casts of Maillol's sculptures that Dina Vierny claims to have discovered in 1978/79, and generally deals with the problem of replicas, so she was also consulted in the Arp case .

Berger received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in 2008 .
