Ursula Schumm-Garling

Ursula Schumm-Garling (born March 20, 1938 in Berlin ; † April 20, 2021 there ) was a German sociologist and professor . The focus of her work was problems of the working society, in particular the employment of women and industrial relations as well as organizational development.

Life

She studied sociology, philosophy, history and psychology at the Free University of Berlin . She wrote a diploma thesis on Lorenz von Stein and received her doctorate on the subject of "Dominance in industrial work organization". She was a research associate at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in the project “Professional Preparation and Professional Autonomy”. From 1968 to 1974 she headed the automation and modernization policy department at the main board of the ÖTV trade union. From 1971 to 1976 she was a member of the Federal Government's Commission “Economic and Social Change in the Federal Republic of Germany” and from 1989 to 1995 a member of the ISDN State Commission of North Rhine-Westphalia. From 1974 until her retirement in 2003, Ursula Schumm-Garling was Professor of Sociology at the University of Dortmund and from 1981 to 1984 she was also the Managing Director of the State Institute for Social Research in Dortmund . She had lectureships at the Social Academy in Dortmund and at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Her teaching and research activities focused on topics related to the world of work, primarily under the aspect of changes and their effects on employees, caused by the economic and social dynamics of a capitalist social order. The theoretical and empirical thematizations of work and work organization include the power of definition of men and women. The practical relevance of her teaching has always been important to her. She conducted cooperation seminars, excursions and company tours in addition to the university courses and motivated students to enter into dialogue with representatives from practice.

She was a liaison professor at the Hans Böckler Foundation , worked in the Forum Neue Politik der Arbeit and was a member of the advisory board of the Z. Zeitschrift Marxistische Erneuerung . Schumm-Garling was nominated for the 14th Federal Assembly by the party Die Linke in Hessen . From 2014 she was a member of the LEFT Council of Elders as well as a member of the discussion groups “Classes and Social Culture” and “Peace” of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation .

One of the daily media in which she took a position is the left-wing daily Junge Welt .
