The Ursuline Convent Straubing is a convent of Ursuline in Straubing in Bavaria in the diocese of Regensburg .

history

The monastery consecrated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary was founded in 1691 by Elector Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria and the Landshut Ursuline Monastery ; it was dissolved in 1809 in the course of secularization . The monastery assets were initially administered by the royal foundation administration and, after its dissolution, by the magistrate. In 1827 the monastery was restored, the Ursulines built a teacher training institute in 1867 and an in-house business school in 1898 . From 1939 to 1945 the schools were closed by the National Socialists. Today there is a grammar school , a secondary school and a specialist academy for social education with an affiliated kindergarten , which is run by the church.

The church of St. Ursula belongs to the monastery. It is located in the middle of the monastery complex and can be entered from Burggasse (west facade). In 1736 the foundation stone was laid under Superior Maria Magdalena von Empach (daughter of the Mayor of Munich). As an architect, Egid Quirin Asam created the design and was responsible as the architect, while the electoral master builder Johann Baptist Gunetzrhainer supervised the construction on site. The building and the facade were built until 1738, after which Egid Quirin Asam worked as a plasterer and Cosmas Damian Asam as a painter, on the interior of the church. When Cosmas Damian died before the work was finished, Egid Quirin completed the furnishings. For the 50th anniversary of the monastery, the church was consecrated in May 1741 by Johann Theodor von Bayern, Prince-Bishop of Regensburg and Freising.
