Usui Mikao ( Japanese 臼 井 甕 男 ; * August 15, 1865 in Taniai, Yamagata-gun (today: Yamagata ), Gifu Prefecture ; † March 9, 1926 in Fukuyama ) is considered the founder of the Reiki teachings.

Life

No reliable biographical data are available about Usui Mikao. Most of the information about his life that can be found are reports from the Reiki master Hawayo Takata , whose knowledge of Usui's life is based on hearsay, according to her. Usui had already died when she claims to have met his apprenticeship in Japan in the 1930s.

According to the legend spread by Hawayo Takata, Usui is said to have experienced a satori enlightenment experience during a 21-day fasting meditation as a Tendai Buddhist in 1922 on the holy mountain Kurama ( 鞍馬 山 , Kurama-yama ) near Kyōtos . From this he developed a spiritual healing system, which he called Usui Reiki Ryōhō ( 臼 井 靈氣 療法 ). With this system he was able to achieve a large number of spectacular healing successes.

In view of these experiences, Usui is said to have decided to work among the poor and sick in Kyoto's slums, the so-called "Beggar Kingdom", and thereby gain a better understanding of Reiki . Among other things, he is said to have treated many victims of the great Kanto earthquake in September 1923.

Usui later went on trips to spread Reiki and to activate other people's access to Reiki so that they can treat themselves and others with Reiki. He carried out many Reiki treatments and Reiki initiations. He eventually met Hayashi Chūjirō, a reserve naval officer and medic who became one of his historically most important students. After Usui's death, Hayashi took over the tradition of practicing Reiki and teaching Reiki in his clinic in Tokyo.

In February 1925, Usui went to Nakano . He toured Kure , Hiroshima and Saga . On March 9, 1926, at the age of 60, he died in an inn in Fukuyama . At this time he is said to have initiated several thousand students in Japan in Reiki, about twenty of them in the master's degree, according to the directory of Usui Reiki Ryōhō Gakkai . In contrast to today, the initiation into the master's degree always included the qualification to teach Reiki.

The five concepts

Usui's legacy is also the trivial realization that one should work on the things that can be improved and accept the things that cannot be changed. This is the recipe for a happy life.

The essence of this is known today as the five concepts, the five principles, or the five rules of life. They are still taught today during Reiki training.

Every morning and evening, fold your hands, pray from your heart, and shout at
him [Buddha] aloud.
