Uta Birnbaum

Uta Birnbaum (* 1933 ) is a German theater and film director .

Life

Birnbaum studied theater studies from 1952 to 1956 at the Leipzig Theater Academy. From 1956 to 1968 she was employed as an assistant director and dramaturge, and later as a director, at the Berliner Ensemble . In 1966 she set up the text for the “Schaubühne” for the fairy tale novel Der Schuhu and the flying princess together with Peter Hacks . The occasion was the studio production of the State Drama School Berlin in the BAT ( Berlin Workers' and Student Theater ) on April 29, 1966 in Berlin. She directed. The actors were the graduates of the 3rd academic year together with the students of the 1st academic year. From 1968 to 1970 she worked as a director at the Deutsches Theater Berlin . She then worked as a freelance director until 1973.

From 1973 to 1980 she was acting director at the Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam , and finally from 1980 to 1982 director at the Städtische Bühnen Wuppertal . Then she worked again as a freelance director. She taught directing at the Drama School in Berlin and at the University of Music and Theater in Hanover .

Birnbaum is married to the writer Stefan Schütz . She directed several world premieres of his plays, a.o. a. in Neither the devil nor silence (later title: Die Fabrik im Walde ; premiere: Hans Otto-Theater Potsdam 1975), Die Amazonen (premiere: Theater Basel 1977, with Barbara Nüsse ), Odysseus' Heimkehr (premiere: Städtische Bühnen Wuppertal 1981 ) and Sappa (premiere: Städtische Bühnen Wuppertal 1982).
