description

Vegetative characteristics

Utricularia graminifolia is a creeping herbaceous perennial plant . It forms numerous rhizoids with a thickness of about 0.2 to 0.3 mm. The stolons are also richly branched and several centimeters long, they form dense carpets.

The foliage leaves appear numerous and grow tightly packed over the stolons and are divided into petioles and leaf blades. The petiole is rather short. The three-veined leaf blade is up to 4 cm long and up to 6 mm wide, linear to narrowly ovoid.

The traps appear in large numbers and grow on the rhizoids, stolons, petioles, and even leaf blades. The traps are spherical, sitting on short stems and their size varies between 0.5 and 2.0 mm. The opening is on the side and on the left and right of the valve there is a quill- shaped, glandular outgrowth.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescence is erect or trailing, of simple construction and unbranched. The glandular hairy inflorescence stem is 4 to 30 cm long and round with a diameter of 0.4 to 0.8 mm in cross section. The bracts are fused at their base, oval and about 1.0 mm long. The flowers appear in twos or six.

The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The sepals are slightly narrow-oval, the upper sepal is longer than the lower. The lower sepal has a two-lobed tip. The corolla is 7 to 15 mm long and has varying shades of mauve or purple. The upper lip is slightly constricted at the level of the lower middle, the lower part is almost square , the upper part is approximately circular to broadly ovoid. The lower lip is almost circular, with a rounded tip. The base of the upper lip is noticeably swollen, the palate has a raised, ciliate border. The flower spur is conical, tapering to a point, slightly or strongly curved forward and slightly longer than the lower lip.

The capsule fruit is elliptical with a diameter of about 2.5 mm . The capsule walls are membrane-like . The seeds are egg-shaped and about 0.3 to 0.6 mm in size.

Distribution and habitat

Utricularia graminifolia is native to India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Thailand. There it grows in swamps, on wet meadows or on seeping rocks at altitudes of 0 to 1500 meters.
