Uwe Kirschstein (born January 30, 1977 in Simmern / Hunsrück ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and has been Lord Mayor of Forchheim since April 1, 2016 .

Life

Kirschstein was born and raised in Simmern in the Hunsrück . He studied computer science and theoretical medicine in Munich and Stuttgart . After research stays in Oldenburg (Oldb) , Berlin and Hanover , Kirschstein received his doctorate in human biology at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg with a medical-technical thesis on the subject of "assistance system for cervical spondylodesis" . Professionally, he worked in medical technology until he took office.

In the municipal elections in Bavaria in 2014 , Kirschstein was elected to the Forchheim city council for the first time. In addition, he ran as a candidate for mayor election in the same year. After receiving 20.46% of the vote in the first ballot against three candidates, Kirschstein was able to achieve 44.53% of the votes in the runoff election against the incumbent Franz Stumpf . It was the first runoff election since 1990. On December 17, 2015, the city council approved Mayor Franz Stumpf's motion to resign from office at the end of March 31, 2016 for health reasons. The Forchheim District Office set the date for the new election for March 6, 2016. Kirschstein decided to run again in this election. In the first ballot he stayed with three opponents with 28.03% of the votes behind Ulrich Schürr (CSU / JB; 34.27%), in the runoff election Kirschstein outperformed his rivals with 52.19%. Kirschstein took up the office of mayor on April 1, 2016.

In the local elections in Bavaria in 2020 , Kirschstein won the runoff election on March 29, 2020 with 55.33% against Udo Schönfelder (CSU; 44.67%). Previously, none of the three applicants could achieve the required majority in the first ballot. In these local elections, Kirschstein was also elected to the district assembly of the Forchheim district for the first time.
